Woulfe (1923) explicitly gives Ó Maoileóin as “descendant of Maoleóin,” glossing Maoleóin as “servant of St. John,” and he calls the Ó Maoileóin a distinguished ecclesiastical family at Clonmacnoise with multiple abbots and bishops.
